I have a maestro3 ESS Technology ES1983S Maestro-3i PCI Audio Accelerator in an older Gateway laptop. When I run alsaconf, it recognizes the audio card, then says

Download ESS Maestro 3i Audio Driver 5.12.01.1164 For Windows XP

Configuring snd-maestro3 │
│ Do you want to modify /etc/modprobe.d/sound │
│ (and /etc/modprobe.conf if present)?

I answer 'Yes', then it says:
OK, sound driver is configured.
│ │
│ ALSA CONFIGURATOR │
│ │
│ will prepare the card for playing now. │
│ │
│ Now I'll run alsasound init script, then I'll use │
│ amixer to raise the default volumes. │
│ You can change the volume later via a mixer │
│ program such as alsamixer or gamix.

But, it then gives the message:
Loading driver..
Setting default volumes..
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory
Saving the mixer setup used for this in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state.
/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1497: No soundcards found..
Now ALSA is ready to use.
For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.
Have a lot of fun!

At which point, nothing is changed, and the laptop still does not recognize the sound card.
The soundcard itself does work, I have used it under Ubuntu Hardy and Jaunty. I am switching to Debian because I would like to use some of the packages I can only find in the Debian repositories.
